Safety

Fieldwork in remote arctic areas with extreme climate and extreme physical settings requires close attention to the safety of each individual. Safety has top priority, and no unnecessary risks should be taken.
Immediately after your arrival to Zackenberg, the Station Manager will give you a short introduction to the station and the surroundings, incl. area restrictions and sensible behaviour in the different research zones and an introduction concerning safety precautions in relation to the local wildlife. The station manager will introduce you to the use of different weapons, use of VHF-radios and general rules concerning rational behaviour in a mountainous area.

While Zackenberg does not require visiting researchers and students to follow Aarhus University’s internal standards, it is strongly recommended that all participants in fieldwork have completed a basic first aid course and have experience with rifle handling and shooting. These preparations are important for ensuring safety.

Before any fieldwork, it is also recommended that projects carry out a risk assessment to ensure proper planning and preparedness. A risk assessment template is available below.
