Zackenberg plays a vital role in both national and international monitoring efforts, contributing to the fulfillment of environmental agreements and commitments.
Globally, Zackenberg contributes data to major international initiatives, including the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and working groups under the Arctic Council such as AMAP (Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme) and CAFF (Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna). These data are used in key assessments on climate change and its ecological consequences.
At the regional and national levels, the programme is essential to the Kingdom of Denmark’s Arctic research and policy strategies. Zackenberg supports environmental management in Greenland and Denmark by providing science-based analyses and guidance on ecosystem status.
Zackenberg’s data are also part of several international scientific networks and research programmes, including CALM, TSP, ITEX, GLORIA, ACD, HDISC, FLUXNET, ICOS, and POLARIN. These collaborations enable broad spatial and temporal analyses that strengthen the global understanding of Arctic change.
Further details about Zackenberg’s contributions to organizations, programmes, and research networks can be found in the individual GEM Basisprogrammes and the GEM Strategy 2022–2026.
